Difference between Labiaplasty and Vaginoplasty

Cosmetic gynecology treatments can be confusing for many to understand, with patients often confusing some procedures with one another. Two of the major cosmetic gynecology treatments that are often mixed up are Labiaplasty and Vaginoplasty, which in reality, are entirely different concepts. Let’s look at how Labiaplasty and Vaginoplasty in India differ from each other.

What is a Labiaplasty?

A Labiaplasty focuses on the labia or the vaginal lips. When excess tissue builds up on either one of the vaginal lips (Inner or outer), the shape and looks of the vagina changes, often also causing issues that affect daily functions, such as sexual intercourse, exercising, etc. Some women also suffer from abnormally shaped labia, which cause functional and aesthetical issues. During a Labiaplasty in Delhi and Mumbai, India, the tissue is reshaped and resized, making both the labia proportionate, in length and volume enhancing the aesthetics of the labia.

What is a Vaginoplasty?

Indeed, technically it should be called vaginal tightening or vaginal rejuvenation and NOT vaginoplasty. But vaginoplasty is a term, which has gone into marketing and educational activities. Loose vaginal walls cause multiple issues such as decreased sexual function, incontinence, etc. which can hamper the daily lives of women, as they struggle through even the most simple of tasks. A Vaginoplasty narrows the vaginal canal, restores sensitivity to the vagina during sexual intercourse, and treats incontinence issues that women face.

What is the difference between Labiaplasty and Vaginoplasty?

Being completely different procedures, there are essentially various differences between Vaginoplasty and Labiaplasty. Here are some of the major differences.

1. Inner vs Outer Vaginal treatment

A Vaginoplasty essentially deals with the inside of the vagina, by tightening the vaginal canal. It restores feeling to the vagina, and promotes higher sexual satisfaction, and also treats issues such as urinary incontinence. While labiaplasty works on the outer part of the vulva, by only reconstructing the labia. This helps aesthetically and functionally correct issues such as abrasion, painful sexual intercourse, etc.

2. Non-surgical vs Surgical treatment

Though surgical forms of Vaginoplasty exist, there are also non-surgical forms such as ThermiVa, Fiore, Lasers etc., which make use of radiofrequency or laser to conduct the treatment in a non-invasive manner. The recovery is minimal as well. Labiaplasty is purely surgical, with no non-surgical variants introduced as yet.

3. Functional Differences

The functional issues that Vaginoplasty treats are incontinence, vaginal dryness, decreased sexual satisfaction, etc., while labiaplasty treats functional issues such as abrasion, excessive pain during sexual intercourse, and more.

4. Sex Change Operation

In transgender cases, Labiaplasty is typically a part of the male to female transgender procedures. Labia is constructed, using this method. However, vaginal tightening or vaginal rejuvenation is not a part of the surgery, as it is only used to tighten the vagina, and not construct one.

Understanding the key differences between Labiaplasty and Vaginoplasty should be understood by any patient who is looking at availing any form of cosmetic gynecology treatment. Before you opt to consult with your doctor, understanding what issues you are facing, and how to treat them, is essential to develop a clear idea of your reason for considering cosmetic gynecology procedures.
